Falkland Palace

The Royal Palace of Falkland was a country residence of Stuart kings and queens. And Mary Queen of Scots spent part of her life here. The roofed South Range contains the Chapel Royal, and the East Range the Kings Bedchamber and the Queens Room. Both restored by the National Trust for Scotland. The Keepers Apartments in the Gatehouse are also now on display. Falkland Palace is also home to the oldest real tennis court in Britain. Originally built for King James V in 1539.

Scotland’s Secret Bunker

Scotland’s best kept secret for over 40 years. This is where the country would have been governed from in the event of a nuclear war. Scotland’s Secret Bunker is an amazing labyrinth the size of 2 football pitches, 100 feet underground, and is open to the public all year round. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Fife and is a chilling reminder of the twilight of the Government’s Cold War.

Kellie Castle & Garden

Kellie Castle dates from 1606. Built as an E plan tower on the site of a castle from the 1100s. Having been passed between several generations of the same two families across 250 years, the castle was eventually claimed in 1835 by John Erskine, 9th Earl of Mar having been abandoned several years before. Today the Great Hall is an immensely impressive drawing room. The castle has its own tiny chapel, and the old stables now house an exhibition on Hew Lorimer’s sculpture. The beautiful walled garden lies to the north and the east of Kellie Castle. And the summerhouse exhibits a display on the history of the walled garden.

Testimonials

We stayed in lodge 4 which was by far the best holiday accommodation we have ever stayed in, immaculate, spacious, so well equipped. The books, DVDs and board games were an extra touch and came in handy for some family time after exploring during the day. The surrounding area is beautiful and so many things to see and do nearby. West Sands beach is clean and beautiful and Bishop’s Wood and Craigtoun Country Park about a mile away are both worth a look. There are so many things we didn’t get chance to explore so I think we will be back. I think we will struggle to find any other accomodation as nice as this. Many thanks to Anne and the team.
