Inside Kellie Castle

The oldest towers of the castle date back to the 1360s. Over the years, many families have added and improved the buildings, including the Oliphants, Erskines and Lorimers. It was the Lorimer family who made significant changes to the overall look of the castle, creating a place they could stay and relax in with all the comforts they could need.

Visitors are able to tour inside the castle. Here, with the help of a knowledgable guide, you can explore the drawing room, earl’s room, blue room and the nursery as well as many more elegantly decorated spaces. There is a beautiful range of artwork on display, from tapestries to paintings.

A tearoom is a great place to spot for a break at the castle, and if you have kids with a bit of energy, there’s a woodland playground for them to run around and enjoy the day.

Kellie Castle Gardens

The gardens of Kellie Castle are kept in exquisite condition, and are open for visitors to view when they purchase a castle ticket. Of particular note is the Arts & Crafts garden which hits the senses with delightful smells and a range of fruits and vegetables growing throughout the year.

It is the National Trust for Scotland’s first fully accredited Organic Walled Kitchen Garden. It’s a delightful, peaceful place to enjoy some time outside, and if you like it enough, you can even buy some of the plants to take home with you from the nearby shop. Think of all the wonderful culinary creations you can make back in your self-catering kitchen at Elderburn Lodges, then eating the fruits of your work (and Kellie Castle’s) outside on a beautiful Scottish evening.

Testimonials

We stayed in lodge 4 which was by far the best holiday accommodation we have ever stayed in, immaculate, spacious, so well equipped. The books, DVDs and board games were an extra touch and came in handy for some family time after exploring during the day. The surrounding area is beautiful and so many things to see and do nearby. West Sands beach is clean and beautiful and Bishop’s Wood and Craigtoun Country Park about a mile away are both worth a look. There are so many things we didn’t get chance to explore so I think we will be back. I think we will struggle to find any other accomodation as nice as this. Many thanks to Anne and the team.
