Fun days out at Craigtoun Country Park

Craigtoun Country Park is the perfect place to visit for fun days out. Just a 5-minute drive from us here at Elderburn Lodges, the park has plenty for you to do all year round. Parking and entry to the park are free and, with 47 acres to explore, it is heaven for walkers, joggers, runners and cyclists. But those who are looking for entertainment won’t be disappointed either. Kids and adults alike will be delighted with the Fairy Glen. This enchanting wooded area has cute little wooden fairy houses to explore. You can let your imagination run wild with thoughts as to what the inhabitants would look like and how they would spend their days.

If you need an injection of excitement, there’s plenty going on to ensure you have a fun day out too. The kids can play to their heart’s content in the large adventure playground and the all-inclusive play area. For a bit of high-energy fun, there’s the trampolines and Trim Trails. And if you feel the need for speed, there’s the 30ft zip wire to whizz along! Dogs are also welcome, as long as their owners are well-behaved and clean up after them!

Paid attractions

While there is a lot to do at Craigtoun Country Park that is free, there is some extra fun to be had. From Easter through to October, the Friends of Craigtoun run various rides and attractions to help raise funds for the upkeep of the park. They are open every weekend during the season and every day throughout the school holidays.

There’s tractor rides, bouncy castles, a railway, a boating lake, crazy golf, go-karts and more! You can buy tickets for the attractions that take your fancy or buy a wristband for the day. The whole family will have a smashing time without breaking the bank!

Craigtoun Gardens

During the late 18th century, General George Melville built the first Mount Melville House. He commissioned beautiful landscaping of the estate for his family and friends to spend their leisure time in. Then, in 1901, Dr Younger became the second owner of the estate. He commissioned architect Paul W Waterhouse to design a new house and landscape the estate further. Formal gardens, the Walled Garden, Cypress Avenue, the Rose Garden and the Italian Garden were all created with some 230 trees planted.

Visitors to Craigtoun can wander through these beautiful areas for free. A wonderful fun day out for the green-fingered and plant-lovers in your family! Exotic and specialist plants, sourced from plant collector Micahel Wickenden can be seen in the Walled Garden and Rose Garden. And the estate has two national collections of the beautiful Siberian iris.

Testimonials

Just returned from a fantastic relaxing break at lodge 1 at Elderburn Lodges.
The lodge really is a home from home and the setup of the lodge is great for 2 couples having the lovely spacious shared central areas but the bedrooms are spaced well apart.
The lodge was spotless and well equipped and some of the little extras within the lodge were excellent.
The location is ideal for visiting St Andrews and the lovely Fife coast.
The visitors book within the lodge was full of reviews from returning customers and we would highly recommend these lodges and look forward to our next visit.
