Getting to East Sands

East Sands beach in St Andrews is on the south side of the old harbour. You can walk there from the Old Course in around half an hour. By car it’s only about 6 minutes away. There is a car park at this beach, so if you are driving straight there from Elderburn Lodges you can be parked up and enjoying the fresh sea air in a little over 90 minutes.

There are plenty of facilities available to make your day perfect. Most notably for safety there is a lifeguard on duty during peak season. This is usually from the middle of June until the middle of August, from 10am – 6pm. For exact dates please see the RNLI website for the beach.

Useful facilities

Especially important to those visiting with young children, the beach has toilets. Interestingly – if you like that sort of thing – Fife’s toilets have been recognised as some of the best in the UK. Other facilities include a cafe and restaurant The Cheesy Toast Shack. The owners of the shack appeared on popular BBC cooking show, Saturday Kitchen. A sure sign that their food is tasty!

East Sands is also a popular beach from which to enjoy watersports. The St Andrews Sailing Club is a good first port of call to find out how to get on the water there.

Water lovely place to visit!

St Andrews East Sands beach is an award winner! Scotland’s Beach Award is given to beaches which are clean, well-managed and sustainable. Only 51 such awards were given out in 2024. 13 of those are in Fife, and East Sands is one of those. So you can build sandcastles safe in the knowledge the sand is nice and clean.

The sea is popular with water sports enthusiasts as well as wild swimmers. Although it can be a bit chilly at times, it makes for an exhilarating and memorable experience. This beach also has rock pools when the tide is low, making it an adventurous area for people of all ages to discover starfish, crabs and fish hiding in nooks and crannies.

Testimonials

We stayed in lodge 4 which was by far the best holiday accommodation we have ever stayed in, immaculate, spacious, so well equipped. The books, DVDs and board games were an extra touch and came in handy for some family time after exploring during the day. The surrounding area is beautiful and so many things to see and do nearby. West Sands beach is clean and beautiful and Bishop’s Wood and Craigtoun Country Park about a mile away are both worth a look. There are so many things we didn’t get chance to explore so I think we will be back. I think we will struggle to find any other accomodation as nice as this. Many thanks to Anne and the team.
