Cambo Gardens St Andrews

Cambo Gardens offers a wonderful day out for all the family when you are visiting St Andrews. There’s a nature play area with possible sightings of the elusive Glingbob and Tootfit. A beautiful 2.5-acre walled garden. 70 acres of wonderful woodland to explore. And a golf course set in 200 acres of estate land. There are plenty of things to do on the estate to keep everyone happy while on a visit or holiday in St Andrews!

The Cambo Estate lies on the East Coast of Fife, just 7 miles from the centre of St Andrews. Although it’s been there since the 12th or 13th century, it has changed hands and looks, many times. A new house was built on the estate after a fire devasted the old house in 1881. The staff decided to have a party while the family were away and it turned more than a little raucous. For the last 300 years, the estate has been owned by the Erskine family who have invested heavily in it.

The Walled Gardens

The walled gardens at Cambo house are worth visiting when you are in St Andrews. Dating back to the 1800s, they are home to the Plant Heritage national collection of snowdrops, a highlight in the winter gardens. But if you can’t visit in winter, don’t worry as the Horticulture team endeavours to create areas of interest all year round. The garden is constantly changing with themes and colours. For example, the prairie garden, unique in Scotland, can be seen late in the season.

Check here for garden entry prices and annual passes. Themed and seasonal tours are available throughout the year as well as a programme of courses and workshops. You can even purchase specialist snowdrop bulbs, gifts, eco-friendly products and more in their online shop.

Wander through the woodlands

The Cambo Estate maintains 70 acres of woodland that has a huge network of tranquil footpaths to wander along, including the disabled access Badger’s Trail. The Fife Coastal Path runs alongside the Cambo 2-mile sea border and can be accessed by some of the footpaths through the woodland. And to make sure you don’t get lost, you can pick up a map from the visitor centre which is housed in the renovated Georgian stables.

Timber harvesting is managed to promote a well-balanced ecosystem for the abundant wildlife, brash piles and the occasional standing deadwood are left behind to create a rich habitat. Which makes the woodlands fabulous for mini-beast hunting!

The visitor centre has an extensive exhibition that describes the history of Cambo House and the Gardens and its place in St Andrews. The Tack Room showcases work by local craft makers as well as gifts and other products to buy.

The Kingsbarns Golf Links

Golf has been enjoyed on the Cambo Estate since the 1700s. However, the golf course has certainly seen its share of change. The original course was ploughed over in 1850 by a Cambo Estate tenant farmer to add to his farmable area. The Old Kingsbarns Golf Society was re-established in 1922 and a new nine-hole golf course was laid out. Unfortunately, during World War II, the area was mined as part of the defence effort.

At the beginning of the 21st century, a new course was built on the land. The current Kingsbarns course opened in 2000, to much critical acclaim. Ranked in the top 100 courses in the world, the Dunhill Links Championship is held there annually. Kingsbarns hosts the European Tour’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship annually, together with the Old Course at St Andrews and Carnoustie Golf Links.

Testimonials

We stayed in lodge 4 which was by far the best holiday accommodation we have ever stayed in, immaculate, spacious, so well equipped. The books, DVDs and board games were an extra touch and came in handy for some family time after exploring during the day. The surrounding area is beautiful and so many things to see and do nearby. West Sands beach is clean and beautiful and Bishop’s Wood and Craigtoun Country Park about a mile away are both worth a look. There are so many things we didn’t get chance to explore so I think we will be back. I think we will struggle to find any other accomodation as nice as this. Many thanks to Anne and the team.
