The historical fishing port of St Monans

The smallest of the East Neuk fishing ports, St Monans makes up for it with charm and beauty. Along with its harbour, fishermens cottages and easy access to the Fife coastal trail, it makes for a splendid day out exploring the fife. Exactly who St Monan was is a bit of a mystery, but fortunately the town named after this enigma is a lasting legacy for everyone to enjoy.

Things to do in St Monans

St Monans Church is one of the oldest in Scotland, dating back to the 14th century. Sat on the edge of the Firth of Forth, its gothic architecture and serene atmosphere make it a must-visit. There are also opportunities in the area to go out in fishing boats, or just for a trip. The scenic coastal walks are what bring many to this area, and by following the Fife coastal path, you can enjoy the views too.

An industrial heritage

There are three piers here, the earliest dating from 1596. They are the remains of what was once a busy fishing port, seeing thousands of boats come and go each year. Exploring these offers great views and a glimpse of life back in the day. Also offering a stunning vista is the trip up to St Monans Windmill, just outside the village. This is the only remains of what was once a thriving salt industry here. The village has a varied industrial past of exporting iron ore, soon giving way to fishing and shipbuilding.

Testimonials

We stayed in lodge 4 which was by far the best holiday accommodation we have ever stayed in, immaculate, spacious, so well equipped. The books, DVDs and board games were an extra touch and came in handy for some family time after exploring during the day. The surrounding area is beautiful and so many things to see and do nearby. West Sands beach is clean and beautiful and Bishop’s Wood and Craigtoun Country Park about a mile away are both worth a look. There are so many things we didn’t get chance to explore so I think we will be back. I think we will struggle to find any other accomodation as nice as this. Many thanks to Anne and the team.
