Secret coves and wild swimming pools

Back in the 1920s, a group of ambitious locals raised £100 and embarked upon creating this exciting and challenging trail. By fixing chains and posts to the volcanic rock faces (most commonly used on continental mountain ranges) the Elie chain walk was born. The trail chaperones you along a fascinating stretch of Fife coastline. Peppered with hidden coves, caves and pools, those of you who enjoy wild swimming can take a dip along the way. With eight chains to contemplate, you will be guided along some of the most beautiful scenery in the most exhilarating manner. Before you start

Firstly it is important to note that this is not a walk, or should we say scramble, for the faint hearted. You must be fit and agile to navigate your way over the rugged landscape. It is not suitable for young children, but older kids and teenagers who are active will embrace this adventure with nothing but sheer excitement. Another very important thing to factor in is the tides. At high tide, the route is immersed. To endeavour this route it is important you undertake it when the tide is out or going out. The latest you should set out is 2 hours before high tide. You can check tides here. Strong footwear with a good grip is important for navigating this terrain and you may want to consider wearing a helmet.

Getting to the Elie Chain Walk

To get to the chain walk you can park your car adjacent to the golf course. From here you will see a grassy track that runs alongside the golf course taking you to West Beach. When you get to the beach, take a right turn and head westward towards Kincraig point. This is where the chain walk starts. An obvious path guides you to the starting point. Here you will see the safety notice attached to the cliffside. And this is where all the fun begins… good luck!

Just returned from a fantastic relaxing break at lodge 1 at Elderburn Lodges.
