The home of golf

St Andrews is revered as the home of golf, and playing here is a bucket-list experience. The Old Course, with its legendary Swilcan Bridge and Road Hole, is open to the public via ballot or advance booking. Visiting the university

Founded in 1413, the University of St Andrews is Scotland’s oldest and steeped in tradition. The campus is spread throughout the town, making it easy to explore on foot. You can follow the Town and Gown Walk to take in the stunning architecture, including St Salvator’s Chapel and St Mary’s Quadrangle. The walk also includes amazing historical sites like St Andrews Castle and Cathedral.

So what is on at St Andrews Highland Games?

If you are a native, then you’re likely to know what to expect from the Highlands Games. But if you are visiting, you are in for a treat when you see how we Scots do it! One of the main attractions and most famous of the Highland Games sports is the Heavy Weights competition. Here you will see athletes in their kilts displaying great strength. From tossing the caber, throwing the hammer, throwing the weight and putting the shot, you will be in awe of these mighty Scots!

Other events may include the tug o’ war, where two teams heave on either side of a strong rope to see who can out-pull the other. Cycling races and running events allow participants to demonstrate their skill and speed to see who can be the fastest in their field.

Traditional music and dancing

Developed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Highland dancing has become an integral part of the Scottish Highlands Games. Here you will see dancers draped in tartan, flinging, jumping and manoeuvring their limbs and bodies with great skill and agility to demonstrate their technique and artistry in this masterful form of dance. Performed to the sound of bagpipes, you will experience the true essence of all things Scottish as the sounds and sites envelope your senses.

Solo bagpiping sees pipers compete against each other to the sounds of our national and iconic bagpipe music. With plenty happening you are spoilt for choice and can spectate at your pleasure on your day at the St Andrews Highland Games.

Over Easter weekend, the National Trust for Scotland is running its annual NTS Easter Egg Trails across the country. Enjoy a spring walk, solve clues along the way and win a chocolate reward! The trail at each site is completely different, so you can try as many as you like. Each trail sheet costs £5 and provides fun for all the family. Easter weekend at Craigtoun Country Park

Saturday 19th & Sunday 20th April, 10.30 am – 5 pm

Craigtoun Country Park is situated 5 minutes from St Andrews and offers a wide range of attractions, including acres of beautifully landscaped parkland, a fun adventure playground, boats and pedalos, bouncy castles, a putting green, a crazy golf course, a family-friendly cafe and one of Scotland’s oldest miniature railways! On Saturday and Sunday, the park will host an Easter Fayre, with crafts, stalls, activities and entertainment. Entry is free.

Crail Craft and Food Fayre

Saturday 19th & Sunday 20th April, 11 am – 4 pm

In the nearby picturesque fishing village of Crail, an Easter Craft and Food Fayre is taking place in the community hall. The family event will have arts, craft and food stalls set up in the small and large halls and a cafe will be open on both days. Entry is free.

The Open and St Andrews

St Andrews hosted its first Open in 1873. Since then, its famous Old Course has set the stage for some of the most memorable moments in golf history. To date, St Andrews has hosted The Open a record 30 times, more than any other location. It has also hosted The Women’s Open on three occasions. St Andrews currently hosts the men’s Open every 5 years, with the last time being in 2022.

Attending The Open in 2027

If you’re interested in attending this prestigious golfing competition as a spectator, you can register your interest for tickets here. Tickets are usually allocated through a ballot system due to high demand, and more information will be released closer to the time.

Even if you don’t manage to secure a ticket, St Andrews is an exciting place to be during the tournament. The streets are packed with golf fans, creating a festival-like atmosphere with pop-up bars, big screens broadcasting the action and live entertainment. Local pubs and restaurants are filled with fans discussing every shot, while golf shops and stalls sell memorabilia.

St Andrews becomes extremely busy during The Open, and you’ll need to book early to secure your accommodation. St Andrew’s day celebrations take place every year in Scotland (and across the world) on the 30th November. What better place to celebrate the patron saint of Scotland than in the town which bears his name? Here in St Andrews and our surroundings, we have many events to choose from to mark the day. Once you decide on how to spend the day, don’t forget to book your break with us.

So what exactly is St Andrew’s Day all about?

First off, for the grammar purists, let’s be clear on one thing – the apostrophe. St Andrew’s Day has an apostrophe because it is his day we are celebrating. The town of St Andrews doesn’t have an apostrophe because, well…we think the town predates the use of them in the English language. It certainly makes proofreading blogs about St Andrew’s Day in St Andrews interesting!

But for those of you who are new to St Andrew’s Day we thought it a good idea to give you a brief summary of who he was and why the day is so important to us Scots!

About St Andrew

St Andrew was a Galilean fisherman before he became a disciple of Jesus. Many believe he was crucified on 30th November, 60AD, on an X shaped cross (remember this part, it’s important later) and his relics were kept safe. Exactly how the name and relics of St Andrews spread to Scotland and to Fife is up for debate, but it is thought that in AD 732 they were brought here by Bishop Acca as he looked for asylum with the Pictish king having been kicked out from his own diocese. These relics were originally held in Kilrymont, and it was this town which was later renamed St Andrews.

Then, one hundred years later in AD 832, the Battle of Athelstaneford  in East Lothian raged. King Angus led an army of Scots and Picts against the Saxons, but he feared defeat. He looked to the sky and say a large white X, and vowed that should he win the battle, he will name St Andrew as the patron saint of Scotland. And the rest, as they say, is history.

The relics originally brought to shore included a tooth, a knee-cap an arm and finger bones. Sadly in the Scottish Reformation these relics were destroyed. But, in 1879, Archbishop Amalfi gifted Andrew’s shoulder blade and Pope Paul VI gifted further relics in 1969 to Scotland. These can be seen at St Mary’s Cathedral in Edinburgh.

Why we celebrate

St Andrews day is the feast day of Scotland’s patron saint, St Andrew. Many Scots mark this day every year on 30th November and celebrate our Scottish culture, food and dance. The day also marks the beginning of Scotland’s winter festivals and has been an official bank holiday here since 2006.

So what is on in St Andrews?

A big hoolie in Scotland is a big party, and there’s one happening on St Andrew’s Day! Piping, fireworks, dancing – everything is free and will be happening to make for a memorable day. The Peat Inn is a wonderful Michelin-star restaurant near St Andrews. It’s located in Peat Inn village (the village is named after the inn itself!). Scotland’s Secret Bunker

Hidden beneath a Scottish farmhouse lies Scotland’s Secret Bunker. This 1950s nuclear bunker lies 100 feet below ground and is the size of two football pitches, one on top of the other. So there is plenty of exploring to do! Go and discover the story behind this fascinating part of Scotland’s history.

Harbourmaster’s House

The Harbourmaster’s House overlooks the historic harbour of Dysart. Hidden along the Fife Coastal Path, which runs from the Forth Estuary in the south to the Tay Estuary. Visit the Coastal Centre in the basement of the house to learn about Fife’s coastline and the history of the harbour. You can also enjoy refreshments in the Harbourmaster’s Cafe. There are plenty of bird-watching trails on the doorstep of Elderburn Lodges. Front the Fife Coastal Path to the beautiful Eden Estuary. This is one of the best sites in Fife for bird watching. You’ll see plenty of wild ducks and shorebirds. It’s the go-to place to see the most Black-tailed Godwits in Scotland. You can spot them here throughout the year, especially during late March and April. Don’t forget to pack your binoculars!

St Andrews’ coastline is a picturesque blend of rocky shores and sandy beaches. You can take a stroll on East or West Sands Beach for a bit of nature spotting in St Andrews. Keep an eye out for seals chilling out in the sun on the rocks. They love to hang around, basking in the warmth and occasionally taking a dip in the water.
