Did you know it took 4,500 workers to build the Forth rail bridge? Were you aware that the Forth road bridge was the longest of bridge of its kind outside the US when it was built? The Forth Bridges have been famous landmarks on the Firth of Forth for many years. Now rising out of the water like a white angel is the new Queensferry Crossing. Joining the family of the famous duo, each bridge has its own story to tell. Of all the places to visit in Fife, this location is iconic and absolutely worth a visit.

Telling the story of three bridges

Travellers would cross from Lothian to Fife in the area well before the invention of trains and cars. As methods of transport evolved so did the need for alternative ways of crossing this expanse of water.

Through remarkable feats of engineering, these bridges rose out of the water thanks to hundreds of workers, many of whom risked their lives to build them. The rail bridge came first and was completed in 1890. It had a total length of 2,467. and its highest point is 110m above water level. It is still in regular use to this day, and you can easily buy tickets and take a train ride across and back.

The Forth Road Bridge came next, completed in in 1964. It’s over 2.5km long. Until relatively recently was still used daily by motorists. Today, it has been semi-retired. The bridge is now for exclusive use by pedestrians, cyclists and public transportation vehicles.

Finally, in 2017, the Queensferry Crossing opened. For exclusive use by motorway traffic (you cannot walk across it), it is s the longest 3-tower, cable-stayed bridge in the world. at 2.7km. It’s absolutely worth a drive over to admire it’s beautiful design, and also the breathtaking views of the other two bridges spanning the Forth.

Perfect family day out in Fife

The bridges are a little under an hours drive south from Elderburn, and are worth a day trip to see. For many, it’s a bucket-list achievement. Take a trip over and stop for something to eat in South Queensferry. Also, don’t miss an opportunity to take a boat ride onto the water and see the bridges from a whole new perspective!

Fling yourself into the St Andrews Highland Games

If you’re staying with us at Elderburn Lodges this July, put this date in your diary. The St Andrews Highland Games is taking place on Sunday July 27, 2025. Tickets are available to buy online now. So secure your tickets now and look forward to a great family day out in Fife.

So what is on at St Andrews Highland Games?

If you are a native, then you’re likely to know what to expect from the Highlands Games. But if you are visiting, you are in for a treat when you see how we Scots do it! One of the main attractions and most famous of the Highland Games sports is the Heavy Weights competition. Here you will see athletes in their kilts displaying great strength. From tossing the caber, throwing the hammer, throwing the weight and putting the shot, you will be in awe of these mighty Scots!

Other events may include the tug o’ war, where two teams heave on either side of a strong rope to see who can out-pull the other. Cycling races and running events allow participants to demonstrate their skill and speed to see who can be the fastest in their field.

Traditional music and dancing

Developed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Highland dancing has become an integral part of the Scottish Highlands Games. Here you will see dancers draped in tartan, flinging, jumping and manoeuvring their limbs and bodies with great skill and agility to demonstrate their technique and artistry in this masterful form of dance. Performed to the sound of bagpipes, you will experience the true essence of all things Scottish as the sounds and sites envelope your senses.

Solo bagpiping sees pipers compete against each other to the sounds of our national and iconic bagpipe music. With plenty happening you are spoilt for choice and can spectate at your pleasure on your day at the St Andrews Highland Games.

A holiday in Scotland is a great idea at any time of the year. Whilst the summer months bring long days and sunshine, the winter months offer the chance for remarkable snowfall, starry nights and drams of whisky by the fire. A winter getaway in Fife means enjoying all our popular attractions and activities but with fewer queues and quieter roads.

Fife is only a short distance from both Glasgow and Edinburgh, and staying in Elderburn Lodges makes for a perfect winter escape here. With so many beautiful destinations nearby, make the most out of the season and enjoy beach days, countryside days and warm, cosy nights in Fife.

Scenic Winter Landscapes

Winter in Scotland usually brings a cold, crisp air. This makes walks along a harbour in Pitenweem or a stroll through the beautiful streets of Culross all the more exhilarating. The scenery takes on a fantastic life of its own at this time of year. As the leaves drop and the trees show their bare branches, it offers a starkly beautiful view of Scotland. It also means that it can be easier to spot wildlife, as red squirrels have fewer hiding places! And if you are lucky enough to catch the sight of a Highland Cow with its breath creating a steam cloud, just make sure you have your camera ready.

Although we can’t guarantee snow, should you be lucky enough to get some during your stay you will be able to revel in the white duvet that makes Fife stunning. Build a snowman, go for a snowy walk or just stay in your Elderburn lodge and enjoy the gorgeous scenery from the comfort of a fireside. The choice is yours.

Winter food

Many cafes and restaurants in Fife pride themselves on using local and seasonal produce in their dishes. Winter is a particularly good time for those who like game. Shooting season typically runs from around late autumn to late winter and you can expect to enjoy the freshest pheasant, venison and partridge in destinations like Kinneuchar Inn.

Alternatively, if you are looking for ingredients to cook back at your lodge and make everything exactly how you like it, there are many fine butchers to be had in Fife. For example, Tom Courts Butchery is multi-award winning and situated in Burntisland. From game to haggis and quality sausages they are a popular location for all your meaty needs!

Things to do in winter

Throughout the year you will always find indoor and outdoor things to do in Fife. Hiking and cycling are always popular, offering a different experience every time. There are plenty of cafes and friendly pubs to sit in and watch the world go past with a hot chocolate or beer. The sandy beaches at St Andrews are always worth a visit, and especially so if you are looking to do some windsurfing.

There are also winter festivals to be found around Fife. Enjoy the Dunfermline Winter Festival in December; late night Christmas markets in Cupar at the end of November/start of December; or even some pantomime action at the Byre Theatre in St Andrews.

Getting to Fife in winter

Fife is easily reachable by Scotland’s two main airports, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Whether you hire a car or hop on a train, you can be enjoying our scenery and good easily and quickly this winter.

St Andrews is fast becoming the winter destination of choice in Scotland for those in the know. It may be cold, but with its small town charm, cute boutiques and loads of local hidden gems, it’ll warm up a magical winter experience in one of Scotland’s oldest towns. So, why not spend Christmas in St Andrews this year?

Get into the Swing of Christmas in St Andrews

Teeing off in the middle of winter may not be at the top of everybody’s Christmas in Scotland wish list, but a winter golf break should be on yours. As the rest of the UK flock to warmer climates, you can play to your advantage with quieter greens and better rates at some of Scotland’s best golf courses. A little bit of Scottish weather can add a unique challenge to a course you may have played a hundred times before in summer – but it will be different in winter! Whether you tee off at the legendary Old Course, or put your skills to the test on one of the other 11 spectacular golf courses in St Andrews, play and save this winter.

Drink To Another Scottish Tradition

While St Andrews is undoubtedly the undisputed home of golf, it is also home to a number of great whisky distilleries. After a chilly day out on the green, toast a traditional Christmas with a trip to one of the many local distilleries near St Andrews and drink in the glory of one of Scotland’s grandest traditions – whisky.

Beating The Retreat

If you’re looking forward to exploring the fascinating history of this ancient city, you won’t want to miss the pre-Christmas St Andrews Day festivities, on or around 30th November each year. “The Big Hoolie” is a celebration for Scotland’s patron saint, St Andrew, where you can enjoy traditional Scottish food, music and dancing, as well as the festive lights switch-on for a truly magical festive experience.

Theatre lovers have plenty to look forward to in St Andrews at Christmas. The Byre Theatre caters to all tastes, including pantomimes, ballet, orchestral music and the occasional classic film too. Check out their upcoming schedule and book your tickets in advance.

Loving Local

Just walking along the beautifully decorated streets and past the many cosy shops with a steaming cup of hot chocolate is festive treat. It’s also a great opportunity to get a jump-start on all your Christmas shopping.
St Andrew’s day celebrations in St Andrews!

St Andrew’s day celebrations take place every year in Scotland (and across the world) on the 30th November. What better place to celebrate the patron saint of Scotland than in the town which bears his name? Here in St Andrews and our surroundings, we have many events to choose from to mark the day. Once you decide on how to spend the day, don’t forget to book your break with us.

So what exactly is St Andrew’s Day all about?

First off, for the grammar purists, let’s be clear on one thing – the apostrophe. St Andrew’s Day has an apostrophe because it is his day we are celebrating. The town of St Andrews doesn’t have an apostrophe because, well…we think the town predates the use of them in the English language. It certainly makes proofreading blogs about St Andrew’s Day in St Andrews interesting!

But for those of you who are new to St Andrew’s Day we thought it a good idea to give you a brief summary of who he was and why the day is so important to us Scots!

About St Andrew

St Andrew was a Galilean fisherman before he became a disciple of Jesus. Many believe he was crucified on 30th November, 60AD, on an X shaped cross (remember this part, it’s important later) and his relics were kept safe. Exactly how the name and relics of St Andrews spread to Scotland and to Fife is up for debate, but it is thought that in AD 732 they were brought here by Bishop Acca as he looked for asylum with the Pictish king having been kicked out from his own diocese. These relics were originally held in Kilrymont, and it was this town which was later renamed St Andrews.

Then, one hundred years later in AD 832, the Battle of Athelstaneford in East Lothian raged. King Angus led an army of Scots and Picts against the Saxons, but he feared defeat. He looked to the sky and say a large white X, and vowed that should he win the battle, he will name St Andrew as the patron saint of Scotland. And the rest, as they say, is history.

The relics originally brought to shore included a tooth, a knee-cap an arm and finger bones. Sadly in the Scottish Reformation these relics were destroyed. But, in 1879, Archbishop Amalfi gifted Andrew’s shoulder blade and Pope Paul VI gifted further relics in 1969 to Scotland. These can be seen at St Mary’s Cathedral in Edinburgh.

Why we celebrate

St Andrews day is the feast day of Scotland’s patron saint, St Andrew. Many Scots mark this day every year on 30th November and celebrate our Scottish culture, food and dance. The day also marks the beginning of Scotland’s winter festivals and has been an official bank holiday here since 2006.

So what is on in St Andrews?

The Big Hoolie

A big hoolie in Scotland is a big party, and there’s one happening on St Andrew’s Day! Piping, fireworks, dancing – everything is free and will be happening to make for a memorable day. Join locals and visitors alike and spend the day celebrating. Start your day at the community market on South Street from 11am. Find out more about the Big Hoolie here.

St Andrews Day Weekend at the R & A World Golf Museum

Golf lovers simply must spend some time at this golf museum which takes you back to the origins of our favourite game. And over the weekend of the 30th November and 1st December, you can enjoy family crafts and activities in their galleries.

St Andrews, Scotland, is the perfect place for nature lovers. It’s full of trees, animals and beautiful scenery just waiting for you to discover. When you go nature spotting in St Andrews, get ready for an adventure filled with woodlands, coastal wonders and diverse plants that make this town a nature lover’s paradise.

Woodland Wonders

In St Andrews, there are amazing forests and woodlands like Tentsmuir Forest that you can explore any time of the year. Keep an eye out for the iconic thistles, proudly representing Scotland’s national identity and delicate Spring bluebells that make the ground look like a fairy tale. So, if you love nature, lace up your walking shoes, take a stroll and let the explore magic of St Andrews’ woodlands.

Sunset through the trees in Tentsmuir Forest, Fife.

Bird Watching

For birdwatchers, St Andrews is the place to be! You’ll regularly spot robins singing, red kites flying high and maybe even peregrine falcons dancing in the sky. There are plenty of bird-watching trails on the doorstep of Elderburn Lodges. Front the Fife Coastal Path to the beautiful Eden Estuary. This is one of the best sites in Fife for bird watching. You’ll see plenty of wild ducks and shorebirds. It’s the go-to place to see the most Black-tailed Godwits in Scotland. You can spot them here throughout the year, especially during late March and April. Don’t forget to pack your binoculars!

Black-tailed goodwill resting and foraging in shallow water.

Coastal Charm

St Andrews’ coastline is a picturesque blend of rocky shores and sandy beaches. You can take a stroll on East or West Sands Beach for a bit of nature spotting in St Andrews. Keep an eye out for seals chilling out in the sun on the rocks. They love to hang around, basking in the warmth and occasionally taking a dip in the water. And let’s not forget about the birds – they’re everywhere! From elegant seabirds to seagulls and herons soaring in the breeze, watch them dive for fish in the sea.

West Sands Beach in St. Andrews, Scotland.

Sunsets and Starry Nights

When the day turns into night, St Andrews is still a magical place. Check out the beautiful sunset at East Sands Beach. Later, look up at the stars as constellations come to life and the Milky Way paints a dazzling display. We are lucky to be in a quiet rural area with very little light pollution and great views of the skies (when the weather is clear), so it can offer you the best stargazing experience.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="665" src="https://www.elderburnlodges.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Stargazing.jpg" alt="Woman with telescope watching the stars.
Discover the magic of winter in Fife

Winter in Fife, Scotland is such a magical experience. While some people might think it’s all about staying indoors because it’s cold, there are so many wonderful things to do and see that’ll make you love this season. From the beautiful Northern Lights to peaceful seaside views and exciting places to visit, here’s a little peek at what you can enjoy in Fife during the winter.

Stargazing and the Northern Lights

Winter in Fife offers a chance for fantastic stargazing on a clear night. If you’re lucky you might even see the Northern Lights, which are colourful lights that dance in the night sky. You can spot them in spots away from city lights. These lights can be green, purple, pink, or even red and it looks like the sky is putting on a magical show just for you.

Scientists say these lights are made when particles from the sun hit Earth’s air, but that doesn’t take away from the magic of the experience. So, if you visit Fife in winter, look up at the night sky and you might get to see this beautiful display of dancing colours, reminding you of the incredible natural beauty in our world. Fife is the perfect place for star gazing on a clear night, away from light pollution. Remember seeing the Northern Lights in Scotland is a rare occasion, but you might just be the lucky ones!

Explore the beautiful Scottish coast

Fife has a stunning coastline with lovely beaches and cliffs. Even when it’s chilly outside, it’s a great time to take a walk. Breathing in the fresh sea air and listening to the sound of the waves is really relaxing. You can also visit charming coastal towns like Crail and Anstruther just a 20-minute drive away from Elderburn Lodges.

Enjoy the great outdoors

If you like nature, you’ll be happy to know that Fife has forests and woodlands that look especially beautiful in the winter with snow all around like Tentsmuir Forest. Fife’s countryside is home to a variety of bird species and you may even spot a red squirrel or two! There is nothing more exhilarating than wrapping up warm and facing the Scottish elements! And face the elements you will as you stroll the Fife Coastal Path in search of St Monans windmill. Visit this 18th-century windmill and even borrow the keys for a small fee to see inside. Carefully restored, it is the last remaining windmill in Fife.

Outlander Experience

Fife was used a lot as a filming location for the famous series ‘Outlander’. Falkland, Aberdour and Balgonie are but a few, and they are all beautiful in wintertime. Follow in the footsteps of Jamie and Claire and see if you can recognise any of the sites. Check out our Outlander filming locations blog for full details.

Trips and tours in Fife

There are lots of fun trips and tours you can join during winter in Fife. You can learn about history by visiting places like St. Andrews Cathedral or Falkland Palace. Consider joining a whisky tour to warm up and sample Scotland’s renowned spirit.

There is so much more to Fife than just The Home of Golf.
Fife Show first started in 1821 and is a family favourite day out. Held in Cupar on Saturday 18th May 2019 it showcases livestock, machinery, food and drink, trade stands and amusements for children. The Show is run by volunteers and its aim is to promote, support and work with agriculture in Fife and beyond.

Food

Fife Farmers’ Market is held on various dates at Cupar, St Andrews, Kirkcaldy and Dunfermline. They are proud to supply the freshest local produce including meats, cheese, seafood, preserves, beverages, baking, and crafts. In other words… absolutely worth a visit.
