So what is on at St Andrews Highland Games?

If you are a native, then you’re likely to know what to expect from the Highlands Games. But if you are visiting, you are in for a treat when you see how we Scots do it! One of the main attractions and most famous of the Highland Games sports is the Heavy Weights competition. Here you will see athletes in their kilts displaying great strength. From tossing the caber, throwing the hammer, throwing the weight and putting the shot, you will be in awe of these mighty Scots!

Other events may include the tug o’ war, where two teams heave on either side of a strong rope to see who can out-pull the other. Cycling races and running events allow participants to demonstrate their skill and speed to see who can be the fastest in their field.

Traditional music and dancing

Developed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Highland dancing has become an integral part of the Scottish Highlands Games. Here you will see dancers draped in tartan, flinging, jumping and manoeuvring their limbs and bodies with great skill and agility to demonstrate their technique and artistry in this masterful form of dance. Performed to the sound of bagpipes, you will experience the true essence of all things Scottish as the sounds and sites envelope your senses.

Solo bagpiping sees pipers compete against each other to the sounds of our national and iconic bagpipe music. With plenty happening you are spoilt for choice and can spectate at your pleasure on your day at the St Andrews Highland Games.

Everything in life has a natural enemy.
Dogs vs cats.
Spiders vs flies.
Mongoose vs cobra.
And then there’s the most ferocious antagonism on the planet: the Scots vs the Scottish midgie!

Don’t worry, it’s not as bad as some people may tell you. For those new to Scotland, however, the midge might not be a well-known beast. It certainly doesn’t show up easily on photographs, and it’s not the sort of creature that will tip over your bins at night. No, the midge (pronounced midjy…probably) is a tiny little fly that, by its own, would be almost irrelevant. However, it likes to hang about with a few thousand of its friends making it into a very bitey cloud. Fortunately, we Scots have have hundreds of years to prepare deterrents, and this blog will reveal some of our hard-fought secrets to you.

What is a midge?

A Scottish midge is a tiny fly, barely bigger than the head of a ballpoint pen, which likes to travel in swarms. Their favourite food? Blood! Unlike the mosquitos found in other countries, midges don’t transmit disease to humans. They can leave an itchy, swelling lump though. These nibblesome insects enjoy a feast and can make an otherwise perfect picnic spot a rather uncomfortable location in which to stay. But fear not – here are some top tips to keep the Scottish midge away.

Have good genes!

Okay this is something you can’t really change, but you’ll probably notice something strange when a group of you are around midges. Some may not be bitten at all, whilst others are covered in bites within minutes. Doesn’t seem fair, does it?

This all comes down – scientists think – to chemicals called ketones. They occur naturally in our bodies, and those who produce more of them tend to be bitten less. The midges must hate it! So if you are bitten all over and your friend isn’t, try not to be too offended. It’s all in the genes!

Avoid their patches

Midges mainly enjoy damp, shaded areas. This is often by water, and they especially like calm areas with little to no wind. You’ll often find them by the shores of a loch on a calm day, especially if the weather feels a bit damp. They also tend to be more aggressive in the early morning or late afternoon, giving you a nice window in between to view Scotland with minimal interruptions!

Elderburn is close to the stunning beaches of St Andrews, and by the sea is somewhere you rarely find midges. This makes it the perfect place to enjoy your holiday without being pestered!

Visit Scotland off-season

One of the reasons why visiting Scotland out of the summer holidays is worth considering is that there is a complete lack of midge! They hate the cold and you don’t have to worry about keeping an eye out for little clouds of teeth. So if you stay at Elderburn over the winter season you can enjoy the crisp sunny days without any bother.

Midge hats

If you are looking to be the height of fashion when in midge country, then keep looking. One of the best ways to stay bite free is also one of the best ways to look like you are a beekeeper. Midge hats or midge nets are like little cloth bags for your head. The mesh is too small for midge to creep through and bite you, and you tighten the string around your neck just enough to keep them out, before tucking it into your top. Available online, the chaps in this video are sporting them with style!

Midge deterrents

If you are determined to stand your ground and keep midges from interrupting your play (good for you!) here are some tried and tested options:

Citronella candles

A few of these placed strategically around a picnic or seating area creates a smell which is lovely to our noses, but hated by the midge. They also provide a night light when the sun starts to set. You can find these at most Scottish supermarkets and DIY stores in the summer, as well as online throughout the year.

Midge spray

A handy spray bottle in your pocket that can be used to keep midges at bay? Don’t mind if I do! One of the most popular is called Smidge, but word-of-mouth indicates that it works better for some people than others. Another option is using a DEET repellant, available at pharmacies and online. This might not be for everyone as these repellants kill other types of insect too, but they certainly are effective.

Avon Skin-so-soft

Yes, you read that right. Whilst at Elderburn we’re all for everyone having nice skin if they want it, this stuff is actually one of the best ways to keep midges at bay. How was this unexpected purpose discovered? We’ll never know, but we’re passing on this top tip to you in the hope you can enjoy your Scottish break in peace and return home with beautifully soft skin too. Thank us later. You can buy this in shops, pharmacies and online.

Take charge of the midge!

So there’s plenty of ways you can be the boss of the Scottish midge, and not let this little insect tell you what to do. Whether that’s topping up with a spray before you leave or being strategic in what you visit and when, you will be able to enjoy your Scottish holiday at Elderburn any time of the year. Check out our special offers and get booking today!

St Andrews is fast becoming the winter destination of choice in Scotland for those in the know. It may be cold, but with its small town charm, cute boutiques and loads of local hidden gems, it’ll warm up a magical winter experience in one of Scotland’s oldest towns.

A holiday in Scotland is a great idea at any time of the year. Whilst the summer months bring long days and sunshine, the winter months offer the chance for remarkable snowfall, starry nights and drams of whisky by the fire. A winter getaway in Fife means enjoying all our popular attractions and activities but with fewer queues and quieter roads.

Fife is only a short distance from both Glasgow and Edinburgh, and staying in Elderburn Lodges makes for a perfect winter escape here. With so many beautiful destinations nearby, make the most out of the season and enjoy beach days, countryside days and warm, cosy nights in Fife.

Scenic Winter Landscapes

Winter in Scotland usually brings a cold, crisp air. This makes walks along a harbour in Pitenweem or a stroll through the beautiful streets of Culross all the more exhilarating. The scenery takes on a fantastic life of its own at this time of year. As the leaves drop and the trees show their bare branches, it offers a starkly beautiful view of Scotland. It also means that it can be easier to spot wildlife, as red squirrels have fewer hiding places! And if you are lucky enough to catch the sight of a Highland Cow with its breath creating a steam cloud, just make sure you have your camera ready.

Although we can’t guarantee snow, should you be lucky enough to get some during your stay you will be able to revel in the white duvet that makes Fife stunning. Build a snowman, go for a snowy walk or just stay in your Elderburn lodge and enjoy the gorgeous scenery from the comfort of a fireside. The choice is yours.

Winter food

Many cafes and restaurants in Fife pride themselves on using local and seasonal produce in their dishes. Winter is a particularly good time for those who like game. Shooting season typically runs from around late autumn to late winter and you can expect to enjoy the freshest pheasant, venison and partridge in destinations like Kinneuchar Inn.

Alternatively, if you are looking for ingredients to cook back at your lodge and make everything exactly how you like it, there are many fine butchers to be had in Fife. For example, Tom Courts Butchery is multi-award winning and situated in Burntisland. From game to haggis and quality sausages they are a popular location for all your meaty needs!

Things to do in winter

Throughout the year you will always find indoor and outdoor things to do in Fife. Hiking and cycling are always popular, offering a different experience every time. There are plenty of cafes and friendly pubs to sit in and watch the world go past with a hot chocolate or beer. The sandy beaches at St Andrews are always worth a visit, and especially so if you are looking to do some windsurfing.

There are also winter festivals to be found around Fife. Enjoy the Dunfermline Winter Festival in December; late night Christmas markets in Cupar at the end of November/start of December; or even some pantomime action at the Byre Theatre in St Andrews.

Getting to Fife in winter

Fife is easily reachable by Scotland’s two main airports, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Whether you hire a car or hop on a train, you can be enjoying our scenery and good easily and quickly this winter.

St Andrews is fast becoming the winter destination of choice in Scotland for those in the know. It may be cold, but with its small town charm, cute boutiques and loads of local hidden gems, it’ll warm up a magical winter experience in one of Scotland’s oldest towns. So, why not spend Christmas in St Andrews this year?

Get into the Swing of Christmas in St Andrews

Teeing off in the middle of winter may not be at the top of everybody’s Christmas in Scotland wish list, but a winter golf break should be on yours. As the rest of the UK flock to warmer climates, you can play to your advantage with quieter greens and better rates at some of Scotland’s best golf courses. A little bit of Scottish weather can add a unique challenge to a course you may have played a hundred times before in summer – but it will be different in winter! Whether you tee off at the legendary Old Course, or put your skills to the test on one of the other 11 spectacular golf courses in St Andrews, play and save this winter.

Drink To Another Scottish Tradition

While St Andrews is undoubtedly the undisputed home of golf, it is also home to a number of great whisky distilleries. After a chilly day out on the green, toast a traditional Christmas with a trip to one of the many local distilleries near St Andrews and drink in the glory of one of Scotland’s grandest traditions – whisky.

Beating The Retreat

If you’re looking forward to exploring the fascinating history of this ancient city, you won’t want to miss the pre-Christmas St Andrews Day festivities, on or around 30th November each year. “The Big Hoolie” is a celebration for Scotland’s patron saint, St Andrew, where you can enjoy traditional Scottish food, music and dancing, as well as the festive lights switch-on for a truly magical festive experience.

Theatre lovers have plenty to look forward to in St Andrews at Christmas. The Byre Theatre caters to all tastes, including pantomimes, ballet, orchestral music and the occasional classic film too. Check out their upcoming schedule and book your tickets in advance.

Loving Local

Just walking along the beautifully decorated streets and past the many cosy shops with a steaming cup of hot chocolate is festive treat. It’s also a great opportunity to get a jump-start on all your Christmas shopping. Free from the run-of-the-mill retail chains, St Andrews is home to a number of independent, family-run shops guaranteed to sell a unique range of gifts and gadgets.

St Andrews, Scotland, is the perfect place for nature lovers. It’s full of trees, animals and beautiful scenery just waiting for you to discover. When you go nature spotting in St Andrews, get ready for an adventure filled with woodlands, coastal wonders and diverse plants that make this town a nature lover’s paradise.

Woodland Wonders

In St Andrews, there are amazing forests and woodlands like Tentsmuir Forest that you can explore any time of the year. Keep an eye out for the iconic thistles, proudly representing Scotland’s national identity and delicate Spring bluebells that make the ground look like a fairy tale. So, if you love nature, lace up your walking shoes, take a stroll and let the explore magic of St Andrews’ woodlands.

Sunset through the trees in Tentsmuir Forest, Fife.

Bird Watching

For birdwatchers, St Andrews is the place to be! You’ll regularly spot robins singing, red kites flying high and maybe even peregrine falcons dancing in the sky. There are plenty of bird-watching trails on the doorstep of Elderburn Lodges. Front the Fife Coastal Path to the beautiful Eden Estuary. This is one of the best sites in Fife for bird watching. You’ll see plenty of wild ducks and shorebirds. It’s the go-to place to see the most Black-tailed Godwits in Scotland. You can spot them here throughout the year, especially during late March and April. Don’t forget to pack your binoculars!

Black-tailed goodwill resting and foraging in shallow water.

Coastal Charm

St Andrews’ coastline is a picturesque blend of rocky shores and sandy beaches. You can take a stroll on East or West Sands Beach for a bit of nature spotting in St Andrews. Keep an eye out for seals chilling out in the sun on the rocks. They love to hang around, basking in the warmth and occasionally taking a dip in the water. And let’s not forget about the birds – they’re everywhere! From elegant seabirds to seagulls and herons soaring in the breeze, watch them dive for fish in the sea.

West Sands Beach in St. Andrews, Scotland.

Sunsets and Starry Nights

When the day turns into night, St Andrews is still a magical place. Check out the beautiful sunset at East Sands Beach. Later, look up at the stars as constellations come to life and the Milky Way paints a dazzling display. We are lucky to be in a quiet rural area with very little light pollution and great views of the skies (when the weather is clear), so it can offer you the best stargazing experience.

Stargazing at the night sky.

Discover the magic of winter in Fife

Winter in Fife, Scotland is such a magical experience. While some people might think it’s all about staying indoors because it’s cold, there are so many wonderful things to do and see that’ll make you love this season. From the beautiful Northern Lights to peaceful seaside views and exciting places to visit, here’s a little peek at what you can enjoy in Fife during the winter.

Stargazing and the Northern Lights

Winter in Fife offers a chance for fantastic stargazing on a clear night. If you’re lucky you might even see the Northern Lights, which are colourful lights that dance in the night sky. You can spot them in spots away from city lights. These lights can be green, purple, pink, or even red and it looks like the sky is putting on a magical show just for you.

Scientists say these lights are made when particles from the sun hit Earth’s air, but that doesn’t take away from the magic of the experience. So, if you visit Fife in winter, look up at the night sky and you might get to see this beautiful display of dancing colours, reminding you of the incredible natural beauty in our world. Fife is the perfect place for star gazing on a clear night, away from light pollution. Remember seeing the Northern Lights in Scotland is a rare occasion, but you might just be the lucky ones!

Watch the Aurora over Fife

Explore the beautiful Scottish coast

Fife has a stunning coastline with lovely beaches and cliffs. Even when it’s chilly outside, it’s a great time to take a walk. Breathing in the fresh sea air and listening to the sound of the waves is really relaxing. You can also visit charming coastal towns like Crail and Anstruther just a 20-minute drive away from Elderburn Lodges.

Enjoy the great outdoors

If you like nature, you’ll be happy to know that Fife has forests and woodlands that look especially beautiful in the winter with snow all around like Tentsmuir Forest. Fife’s countryside is home to a variety of bird species and you may even spot a red squirrel or two! There is nothing more exhilarating than wrapping up warm and facing the Scottish elements! And face the elements you will as you stroll the Fife Coastal Path in search of St Monans windmill. Visit this 18th-century windmill and even borrow the keys for a small fee to see inside. Carefully restored, it is the last remaining windmill in Fife.

Outlander Experience

Fife was used a lot as a filming location for the famous series ‘Outlander’. Falkland, Aberdour and Balgonie are but a few, and they are all beautiful in wintertime. Follow in the footsteps of Jamie and Claire and see if you can recognise any of the sites. Check out our Outlander filming locations blog for full details.

Trips and tours in Fife

There are lots of fun trips and tours you can join during winter in Fife. You can learn about history by visiting places like St. Andrews Cathedral or Falkland Palace. Consider joining a whisky tour to warm up and sample Scotland’s renowned spirit.

Family days out

Winter in Fife doesn’t mean you have to stay indoors, although the region’s cosy pubs are a great way to warm up. There are plenty of family-friendly attractions to keep everyone entertained. The St. Andrews Aquarium is a fantastic option for those travelling with children based in the centre of town.

St Andrews is the home of golf! It is also the home of the British Golf Museum. Situated just yards from the Old Course itself you can discover the history of golf through exploring their fascinating collections.

Step back into history and visit Scotland’s Secret Bunker. Not only is this attraction indoors, but it’s underground! The size of two football pitches stacked on top of each other, you can learn all about this exciting hidden structure that is hidden 100 feet below ground! Find out all about the Government Cold War and why they would have survived and you wouldn’t have!

Easy access to Scotland in winter

Are you thinking about taking a trip up to St. Andrews this Winter? If you’re not, you should be. St. Andrews – and Scotland as a whole – is magical during the winter and should be on everybody’s travel bucket list. The scenery, the festivities, the whisky . . . It’s all perfect, and it could not be easier to access! Travelling to Scotland in the winter is so easy that once you realise, you’ll wonder why you’ve never made the trip.

It’s easier than you think

For some, travelling anywhere in the winter can seem like a daunting prospect, but it really needn’t be. You’ll probably find that getting to Scotland in the colder months is actually easier than in the summer, as there will be significantly fewer tourists trying to get to the same place as you! Who knows why, though, as Scotland is the perfect place to spend the winter.

Driving to Scotland

Getting up to St Andrews in winter is pretty simple for those who drive. Simply drive up from the south of Scotland to just outside Edinburgh, then follow the M90, A92 and finally the A915 until you reach your destination! The majority of the roads are major and well used so even in the frostiest of winter mornings, they’ll be easy to follow and drive along, meaning that even the least experienced drivers will be able to find their way up through Scotland.

Flying to Scotland

If you’re not a driver, plenty of other options exist. One that many people don’t consider is that you can fly to Scotland! To get to St Andrews, fly to Edinburgh and find yourself either a rental car or public transport to Fife. You’ll be able to catch a bus and a train to bring you to our lovely Scottish coast.

Fly from Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton and skip the roads. For those craving a scenic Scottish road trip (and we don’t blame you) fly to Manchester or Edinburgh and drive your way up through all of the dramatic winter scenery Scotland has to offer.

Getting the coach or train

It doesn’t stop there, though. For nervous flyers, there are still a couple of ways for you to get up to Scotland to enjoy the most magical Christmas and festive season you will ever encounter. You can travel to Scotland by coach or train, too.

The Caledonian Sleeper train sets off in the evening from London Euston station, getting you into Leuchars (a 15-minute bus journey from St Andrews) at 5.30am the following morning. Or there are all sorts of train links from Glasgow and Edinburgh to St Andrews. And both stations have links from London and other major stations.

Getting around Scotland in the winter

Traveling to Scotland isn’t the end of it, though. Once you’re here, you’re going to want to explore as much of the wintery magic we have to offer. Luckily, great transport links will get you from your golf tournament to your whisky tasting and back in time for a Hot Toddy. Stagecoach and Moffat and Williamson run regular public transport around St Andrews, and there are reliable rail links between Leuchars and Dundee and Edinburgh.

You can also hire a car and take your own trips out into the Scottish scenery, exploring the beautiful cliffs, woodlands, fields, and lochs dotted all over. For more information about hiring a car in St. Andrews when you’re staying with us, look here.

Why travel to Scotland in the winter?

There are many reasons to take a trip to Scotland this winter. Whether you’re interested in seeing all of the wonderful animals and plants that reside here, or you want to see Edinburgh Castle standing atop its hill, or maybe you’re interested in tasting truly authentic whisky – the Scottish winter has something for everyone.

There’s a high chance of snow (and who doesn’t want a white Christmas?), plenty of festivities between Hogamanay and Christmas, and more whisky than you could ever imagine. If that isn’t enough, you can finish a day of sight-seeing, stargazing, and shopping by truly relaxing and switching off in some of our luxury lodges

Elderburn Lodges are pet-free for your comfort

The comfort of all our guests here at Elderburn Lodges is paramount. We want to make sure everyone’s stay is perfect, and so when it comes to allergen-free holidays we take this seriously and don’t allow pets into our lodges.

We do not accept dogs in our lodges with the exception of assistance dogs in Lodge 6. Dog hair can be a terrible irritant to many, and can immediately ruin their holidays. It requires an intense deep clean to ensure all pet hair has been removed from a bed, sofa or other furnishings. By ensuring our lodges are pet-free, everyone can come and share in our beautiful slice of Fife life.

Dog-free lodges at Elderburn

Our dog-free lodges offer allergen-free holidays to those with a sensitivity to animal hair. You can rest assured (and rest comfortably!) that they have always been pet-free lodges and as a result there won’t be dog hair on the pillows or under the floorboards.

Elderburn self-catering lodges are cleaned regularly and serviced before new guests arrive, so you can be sure of a tidy and fresh space upon arrival. Fluffy pillows and embracing bed covers also mean a good night’s sleep so you can start the next day fresh.

Assistance dogs

Assistance dogs are welcome to join their owners in Lodge 6. However, please make us aware of this in advance, as an additional charge will be applied. This is to cover the deep-clean which will be required to ensure the room is suitable for those who suffer with dog allergies.

Join us for comfortable stays in Fife

Allergies should be the last thing on your mind when you come on holiday. Fortunately, stays at Elderburn Lodge offer you the confidence that your lodge has always been pet-free. So this means you can be sure that you can simply enjoy your break and take in our beautiful surroundings. If you’d like to wake up refreshed, then book a stay with us.

Bag yourself a free teddy!

Family holidays are wonderful. They’re the stuff that memories are made of. Whether you’re on your first family trip, or you go every year, the time spent together never gets less special. At Elderburn Lodges, we understand that every moment you spend together is precious and that it is up to our gorgeous self-catered lodges to make sure that your family holiday is as special as it can be.

To help us achieve that goal, we’ve enlisted the help of a team of delightful teddy bears. These bears are our gift to you as a family when you stay in one of our luxury lodges for 7 nights or more. We hope the teddy bears help you remember us and how much fun you had on your visit to Fife.

The bear is there to go on all of your family adventures with you, to sit guard over your wee ones when they nap after a long day of hiking, running, exploring, and learning, and for you to take on all of your future adventures. Take a bit of Fife with you wherever you go.

What name will you give him? We would love to hear all about the adventures that you and your teddy get up to when you come and stay with us. And don’t forget to share your photos of your trip to Elderburn Lodges with us on our Facebook and Instagram pages.

What adventures could you take your Elderburn bear on?

If you’re at a loss for things to do when you come to stay with us in Fife, do not fret. There is plenty to do in and around Fife for families. All of these will offer you some brilliant memories, great laughs, and even better photo opportunities for you and your new bear.

The Scottish Deer Centre

What better way to introduce your wee ones to Scotland than to wander around 55 acres of Fife countryside, spotting all the different animals that inhabit it, and playing around in the play areas provided?

The Scottish Deer Centre focuses on conservation, education, and research and is home to over 10 species of deer that used to be native to Scotland. The centre is also home to Raptor World, where you and your kids (and your teddy!) can enjoy the birds of prey collection. They even offer handling experiences! We’re not sure that your teddy bear will be strong enough to hold an owl just yet, though, be warned.

Deep Sea World

If deer aren’t your thing, why not take the family along to Deep Sea World? You and your little ones can watch with awe the wonders of the seven seas. From seals to axolotls, there’s plenty at Deep Sea World to keep everyone occupied, even your teddy!

Snap some pictures of your little ones in front of the shark tank. And then get them to teach Teddy all they’ve learned on the way around. There’ll be plenty for them to talk to him about!

Xtreme Trampoline

Are you and your family less nature-inclined and more thrill inclined? Don’t worry, there’s something for you to do with teddy too! We just hope that you’re all ready to jump for joy! At Xtreme Trampoline, you can spend your day bouncing around and learning new tricks together. Why not finish it off with some ice-cold slushies and tasty treats?

We’re sure that your teddy bear would love a trip somewhere so exciting. In fact, we reckon he just can’t ‘bear’ to wait any longer!

We also have a range of games and activities for you and the little ones in our lodges. So, if there’s a day when you all want to cuddle up with your new friend, there’s plenty to do indoors.

Whatever you do with your teddy bear, we hope you make some truly amazing family memories with us.

Remember to add a note in your booking if you would like a teddy (one per child per 7-night stay).
